Ground School Programs

Ground training is a required component for all pilot licenses and ensures you’re well-prepared for FAA written knowledge exam and real-world aviation scenarios. Baltz Aviation offers flexible ground school options to meet your learning style and schedule.

We offer Zoom sessions to save on travel time and provide additional flexibility for the student.

  • Human factors and aeromedical considerations

  • Radio communication and ATC procedures

Instrument Pilot License Ground School Covers:

  • IFR regulations and procedures

  • Instrument flight planning and clearances

  • Navigation systems: VOR, GPS, ILS, RNAV, and more

  • Weather interpretation and IFR decision-making

  • Holding patterns, instrument approaches, and departures

  • Aircraft systems, instruments, and avionics for IFR operations

  • Crew resource management and situational awareness

  • Partial panel operations and abnormal procedures

 

Commercial Pilot License Ground School Covers:

 

  • Advanced regulations and aircraft systems

  • Commercial flight planning and weight & balance

  • Complex aircraft operations

  • High altitude and pressurization systems

  • Aeronautical decision-making at the commercial level

 

Ground school culminates with an endorsement from your instructor to take the FAA Knowledge Test, a necessary step before your checkride.

Private Pilot License (PPL) Program

 

The Private Pilot License is the foundation of your aviation journey. It allows you to fly solo or with passengers for non-commercial purposes and sets the stage for all advanced certifications.

What You’ll Learn:

 

  • Basic aerodynamics and aircraft control

  • Takeoffs, landings, and in-flight maneuvering

  • Navigation, radio communication, and airspace awareness

  • Weather interpretation and flight planning

  • Emergency procedures and decision-making

 

FAA Requirements:

 

  • Minimum 40 flight hours (including at least 20 hours with an instructor and 10 hours solo)

  • Ground school training covering FAA regulations, airspace, and flight theory

  • FAA Knowledge Test (written exam)

  • FAA Practical Exam (Checkride) with a Designated Pilot Examiner

 

Estimated Completion Time:

 

  • 4–6 months depending on the student

Instrument Rating (IR) Program

The Instrument Rating expands your skills and privileges as a pilot, allowing you to fly safely in a wider range of weather conditions and under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). This advanced certification enhances your precision, confidence, and professionalism—an essential step toward commercial flying or advanced ratings.

What You’ll Learn:

  • IFR procedures, regulations, and flight planning

  • Instrument navigation using VOR, GPS, ILS, and RNAV systems

  • Holding patterns, instrument approaches, and departures

  • ATC communications and clearances under IFR

  • Weather interpretation and decision-making for instrument flight

  • Partial panel and unusual attitude recovery

  • Use of modern avionics and flight displays in instrument operations

FAA Requirements:

  • Hold a Private Pilot Certificate

  • Accumulate a minimum of 50 hours of cross-country Pilot-in-Command time

  • Log at least 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time (including 15 hours with an instructor)

  • Pass the FAA Instrument Rating Knowledge Test

  • Pass the FAA Practical Exam (Instrument Checkride) with a Designated Pilot Examiner

  • Pass the FAA Practical Exam (Checkride) with a Designated Pilot Examiner
