FAQ

Have questions about flight training, requirements, or what to expect as a student at Baltz Aviation? You’re in the right place. We’ve compiled answers to the most common questions we receive from prospective and current students to help you navigate your aviation journey with confidence.

  • What are the age and medical requirements to become a pilot?
You can start flight lessons at any age, but to solo, you must be at least 16 years old, and 17 to obtain a Private Pilot License (PPL). A third-class FAA medical certificate is required before solo flights, which you can obtain from an FAA-authorized Aviation Medical Examiner (AME).
  • How do I start flight training?
Begin with a Discovery Flight at Baltz Aviation. This introductory flight allows you to experience piloting an aircraft firsthand under the guidance of a certified instructor. It’s an excellent opportunity to determine if aviation is the right path for you.
  • How long does it take to earn a Private Pilot License (PPL)?
The FAA mandates a minimum of 40 flight hours for a PPL, but most students complete between 55 to 70 hours. Training duration varies based on individual schedules and consistency but typically ranges from 4 to 6 months. The timeline for each student is a little different, and the speed at which content can be grasped depends from person to person.
  • Can I take flight lessons while working or attending school?
Yes! Baltz Aviation offers flexible scheduling to accommodate busy lifestyles. We’ll work with you to create a training plan that fits your availability, whether that’s on evenings, weekends, or a custom rotation.
  • What is a Student Pilot Certificate, and how do I get one?
A Student Pilot Certificate is required by the FAA to fly solo during training. You can apply through the FAA’s Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application (IACRA) system. Your instructor will assist you with the application process.
  • What is ground school, and is it necessary?
Ground school covers the theoretical aspects of aviation, including aerodynamics, navigation, weather, and FAA regulations. Ground School is required and it’s essential for preparing the student for the FAA Knowledge Test and complements flight training.
  • Do I need to own an airplane to learn to fly?
No, Baltz Aviation provides access to well-maintained training aircraft. Owning an aircraft is not necessary for flight training.
  • Do I need to complete training all at once, or can I pace myself?
You’re welcome to train at your own pace. While consistency helps with retention and progress, our programs are designed to adapt to your timeline — whether you want to train intensively or gradually.
  • What pilot certifications does Baltz Aviation offer?
Baltz Aviation currently offers both the Private Pilot License (PPL) and the Commercial Pilot License (CPL). We focus on providing high-quality, personalized instruction for these two core certifications to ensure each student receives the attention and expertise they need to succeed.
  • Are there scholarship options available?
Yes, various scholarships are available to assist with training costs. Visit AOPA and EAA for scholarship information.
  • How much will it cost to become a pilot?
It varies depending on how long it takes the student to learn the requirements to meet FAA standards.
